This brass band workshop, taught by Àlvar Monfort and Albert Costa, founders of Hip Horns Brass Collective, aims to bring the New Orleans style closer to people of all ages.

To learn about the historical roots of this musical style, we will talk about the context in which African slaves laid the foundations of jazz in Congo Square, we will explain how the music they played there ended up transforming into what we know today as jazz and modern music, and how traditions such as those of the second line of New Orleans were established.

We will work on key concepts when playing this musical style (articulations, dynamics, backgrounds, improvisation…) through a repertoire made up of some of the most important songs in the modern brass band tradition, as well as some of the most representative songs and arrangements of Hip Horns. It will be done with a “classic” modern brass band formation: trumpets, trombones, saxophones, sousaphone, bass drum and snare drum, but the workshop is also open to other wind instruments such as flutes, clarinets or euphoniums.

To close the session, the songs worked on in the workshop will be performed outside La Marfà.

By: Àlvar Monfort and Albert Costa, founders of Hip Horns Brass Collective. Collaborating with: La Moderna and La Marfà.
